The apartment which the living room was converted for the heroes of the “Housing question” is located in a house built in 1937. We wanted the interior to match its history.

Luxury modular hardwood floor made of fine wood perfectly fits with the Soviet interior. The main secret is the classic checkers pattern, which looks seamlessly in the Palace halls, and in the avant-garde interiors of postconstructivism.

Commode in the form of the bumper ZIS-181 truck with antique headlights is dominant. The designer emphasized the owner’s fascination with the Soviet automobile industry. The muted olive color of the walls, free and smooth lines without sharp corners immediately envelop and dispose for rest.

In this project of the program “Housing question” designer Katherine Gracheva joined the living room, dining room and office in one space. It based on the classic style that was diluted with a contrast of shapes, colors, textures and filled with different spirits and with interior items, as a result – unusual, but functional and cozy the interior in the power of grunge.

The antique table is surrounded by austere chairs and coated with iron shelve is balanced by a mirrored room divider, a sofa with turning legs, vintage couch, and modern tables. Noble greige hardwood floor Chevron in a classic layout softens counterpoint and creates the impression of a lived-in space with a history.

The sun appears over the horizon in bedroom. The sun fills you with energy for the whole day in bathroom. The sun creates your mood during the leisurely breakfast, while playing on branches on the kitchen wall, and sees you to the door in anteroom. The sun welcomes you in the evening and helps you to relax after the tiresome day in the living room drooping below the triptych horizon.

In the parents’ bedroom the sun is rising leisurely, the clean and soft light floods the room. Due to the abundance of white color and vertical stripes, the room seems to be bigger and more spacious. Nothing in excess, for the main purpose of the bedroom is resting.

The sunrise in daughter’s room is different: plentiful of bright and vivid colors. Yellow, orange, pink – those are the colors of the beginning of the day, new hopes and discoveries. All these shades are somehow associated with the youth. Bright colors do not annoy having the white color in background. The room space is expanded by the trick used in parents’ bedroom: vertical stripes and the big mirror on the wardrobe.

Tree branches enliven the natural motif at the kitchen. The rest of the room belongs to the light itself. It has no visible obstacles: the kitchen is furnished with the minimal furniture set.

Simple forms that do not block the space reign over the living room as well. Here, the homeowners can enjoy the sunset. Soft and muted colors set at rest, the textures of materials make the room cozy. While watching TV or chatting with guests, the homeowners see the sun off to meet it again in their bedroom.

Designer’s commentary: What is at issue here is not making any alterations at all: the space of rooms corresponds to the family structure. What exactly the family of three needs is the huge anteroom, living room and dining room by the kitchen, as well as the bright and cozy bedroom and nursery. The apartment follows the guidelines of the modern design. Yet the interior of the apartment is but based on a wise selection of materials altogether with the lighting and furniture, without the slightest hint of plaster slab.

In fact, the owners of this colorful fantasy wanted to have a classical apartment. The traditional classical apartment with the solid antique furniture, cabriole legs and bucolic paintings. Some traditional elements became the part of the final project. However, the apartment got the very distinctive look: full of life, playful and cheerful. Exactly as its owners! That is the biggest advantage of being a professional designer: he (or she) helps customers to choose the most suitable style among the endless variety.

This interior started from the floor tiles. Of greyish-turquoise color, with attractive pattern, it was the undeniable selection of owners, which created the general mood in all apartment. Then the turquoise kitchen furniture and drawers following the mosaic tile in the bathroom, and flower-pattern wallpapers, which melted all public areas into one, appeared. Besides, some owners’ friends think that the choice was too bold, but the couple is sure that the flower pattern became a forte of the interior. However, a couple of years ago, owners could not even imagine that their apartment would be turquoise. Not to mention light magenta shades! That was not the first, nor the last time when our decisions surprised us.

At the beginning, it was awkward to get used to the idea that the whole space of the living room will be taken by huge sofas in the center of the room sideways to TV set. It appears that it is more comfortable to host friends in such an arrangement. In general, the youth interior is created by adding lots of details and accessories that fill the room. Natalia Halonskaya decided to take a different way: no needless elements, everything is very neat and subtle. The only decoration on empty grey walls are the photos that the mistress of the house took all by herself. Nevertheless, the apartment looks bright and lively. It became possible due to the non-standard finishing, odd furniture, comparing to other Belarusian houses, and the fine selection of materials. Name but a wooden wall at the back of the TV set: the general idea firstly was to plank it, but at the end, the designer found the intriguing solution, where oak panels, overlapping each other, create the noteworthy texture.

The owners’ attraction to the classical style influenced the interior, generally in private areas such as the bedroom and nursery. However, this is more of an interpretation of classical style, not the style itself: the shaped bed-head is “modernized” by the non-standard material – a heavy linen; and the flower-pattern wallpapers were chosen to be very contrast. The most traditional apartment room is the nursery – the heart and soul of the family comfort. Bucolic motif of wallpapers goes along with the flower pattern of the seating furniture, and the link to the bright interior is the snow-white furniture.

Designer’s (Natalia Halonskaya) commentary:

This project was easy and pleasant. Yet, it took quite some time, for home owners could not understand what they would want. As this house is their first hearth where their kids will grow, the homeowners thought that the classical style is the best decision. However, they both are young, creative and jovial. It was necessary to find common ground for these two polarities: freedom and fireside comfort. The style of the living room is the wildest one, when the private areas are more of a classical style. Yet they are nothing but ardent. Name but bedside tables in the bedroom. The family bought them all alone, but I think they would not have been able to find anything better: the traditional form goes with the modern design. The apartment interior is based on subtleties. The place is ideal when raising kids and looking for inspiration.

Cozy love nest for a young couple without “prettiness” and flower patterns? It is easy! Is it possible at all to create the loft design with only 80 square meters of a standard apartment? Nothing is impossible! Nothing is impossible when the youth and courage meet the creative design.

The new life for the small standard apartment in Minsk began a couple of years ago when Artyom – the current owner – decided to start his family. He kept the image of the renovated apartment in secret from his wife-to-be Yulia, willing to amaze her. Therefore, his parents who have the broad experience in housekeeping inspected the apartment thoroughly. It might be the reason why the apartment got the slightly bachelor-like appearance, and at the same time acquired the maximal functionality.

The project turned out to be quite challenging: the very essence of the loft that came to us from the United States with its vast spaces, French windows and industrial style had to be adapted accordingly, and the standard apartment had to be turned into the huge studio. First and foremost, it was necessary to expand the space; that is why the apartment layout was completely changed. Not only spare walls were demolished, but also some interior details, which fractioned the interior. Doors, for instance, were fitted into the walls – it is almost impossible to find them. Furniture makers’ skills were just in time to create doors with hidden hinges according to the designer drawings. There are no handles on commodes – they are opening when pushing slightly. There is no chandelier in the living room too: the spotlight is enough. Such small, almost invisible design tricks make the interior very lapidary and well balanced.

Ceilings in Minsk apartments are not that high comparing to New-York “fellows” located in industrial premises. The designer did not do without some tricks here as well: the glossy ceiling that extends the space visually allows the apartment “breathing”.

Loft usually anticipates the open space and freedom, and at the same time the galore of different decorative elements: art objects, books, design tricks. These things look perfect in vast industrial buildings, but it was necessary to find the perfect balance 80 square meters. The only solution was to combine open and closed storage areas. Only elements that bring a certain message can be seen, the rest is aptly hidden. Well-considered storage areas are the biggest functional advantages of this apartment. No open shelves at the kitchen: kitchenware is stored in big drawers, which can be found even under the dinner table. The separate drawer found its place in the bathroom too. Drawers under the bed easily accommodate all bedroom accessories.

All elements in such an interior stand out. Standard furniture became real art object: stylistically deviant transportation boxes became drawers and commodes, nailed wooden beams are used as chests for different equipment.

Black-and-white street photos that are the distinctive feature of any loft can be found here as well. This feature is extended and gets the local flavor: the whole wall bears the image of the old fire station on Nyamiha. The owner himself found the photo subject. To put it on the wall, not only the photographer, but furniture makers also had to make certain efforts: the image was printed directly on wooden panels of doors and walls.

Brickwork, grey walls, open kitchen hood duct, concrete-like kitchen tile, metal bar counter – all these elements of the industrial style set the tone to the apartment, giving the sensation of non-conformist and rebellious spirit, bravery and creative work.

Р.S. The idea, by the way, was greatly appreciated by the wife-to-be, and her small library and lovely things fit in the interior perfectly.

Designer’s (Andrei Basalyga) commentary:

We agreed on our visions of the interior: the homeowner dreamed of the modern design, and I was eager to try myself as a loft designer. I am happy because we managed to avoid any “prettiness” that could spoil the apartment. We have no flower-pattern curtains, cozy bolsters and gaudy chandeliers. Modern cutting-edge equipment fit in the brutal interior perfectly; everything is looking natural and congruous. The apartment is quite small, that is why it was necessary to keep the stylistic uniformity in every room. Metal face of the bar counter is repeated on bedroom shelves; the wood is used not only for flooring and furniture, but for windows and blinds too. Concrete-like tiles can be found on grey areas of walls.

Sometimes the classical interior creates the sensation of the new dimension. No one hopes seeing the light, dainty rooms that surely belong to the Victorian age in the two-bedroom apartment on the 13th floor. More surprisingly, this illusion was created without a single antique piece.

This apartment is the brightest example of what you can expect when the customer, being perfectionist, trusts his dwelling to the perfectionist who works as a designer. Everything is well balanced and ideal: the fine selection of materials and the combination of textures, the perfect color scheme.

For instance, the upholstery of the biggest object in the living room – a sofa – holds all shades from the interior decoration of this room. Bespoke doors have the same shade that the hardwood flooring. The painting on lamps plafonds in the kitchen calls to the laced curtains too. Even though the designer was too attentive to small details, he avoided being a complete perfect terror: there is no fear to move or touch anything that can destroy the internal harmony. The interior turns out to be vivid and cozy. Furthermore, it corresponds to needs and habits of its owner. The smallest room became the study and library at the same time. The small sofa has also found its place here. It became the comfortable bed for late guests too.

The designer decided to use Baroque as a base for the stylistic approach. However, the color palette softens the splendid shapes of the furniture. The brightest shade in the living room is soft armchairs with berry-colored upholstery.

Sure enough, it would be almost immoral not to pay attention to the splendid view of the city that opens up when looking out the windows. It is but comfortable outlooking the surrounding neighborhood sitting on the loggia, and the wintertime can be passed in comfort in the bay window with winter garden.

Designer’s commentary: it is always a pleasure to work with kindred and congenial soul. We truly became friends with the owner of the apartment, and I have got the carte blanche from her at the very beginning. Almost all furniture is bespoke or was bought in mutual travels. However, the work on the apartment interior did not stop, and we continue filling the space with small details and accessories.

This house is only a couple of years old, yet it is almost impossible to fault it for its young look. The interior adds to the presentability of the house: antique elements, classical furniture, and vintage design. Why the young and modern family chose the traditional design against the dynamic modern solutions?

First, the house structure required the classical approach. However, that was not the first thing to do: the designer could use the contrast of the house exterior and interior styles.

Yet, the most important thing was but the solidity and conventionalism of the house. Before that, the young family lived in the modern apartment. However, moving out of town, the owners sought to leave the vanity, and the constant rush toward fashion. Their house became the image of stability, spiritual opulence, and traditional values. This life philosophy can only be expressed by the classical interior.

Many a time such decoration, which befits mansions of XIX century, seems far-fetched and artificial. Things here go another way: this style is but postulated by the intention to emphasize the attitude towards lasting values and a certain life style. Master of the house is not only the head of the family, but a daily breeder too; a separate study is nothing more but a necessity. Furthermore, the master of the house is hunter, and he needed a place for his trophies. The separate trophy room became the ideal decision. That is how the grand room appeared in the semi-basement, where one can cloister him or herself or spend some time with friends. The mistress of the house has taken no offence as well: the huge and fully equipped kitchen and the big dining room to amuse guests with delicacies. It is certainly a dream for every preserver of the family hearth. All benefits of the suburban house were used in full: the living room with the fireplace, separate bedrooms for kids, separate bathrooms for guests, owners and their kids.

All materials meet the general style: all rooms are linked with the oak furniture that became the base of the interior. The house also has traditional pillars and decorative elements that resemble pillars. They are acting as support pillars in the dining room and anteroom. Wooden abutments in the study visually extend the space of the room: the ceiling is lower comparing to other rooms, because the ground floor has two levels. The contrast is the base of the color palette: the dark wooden furniture looks perfect with the light walls in the background.

Nowadays, several years after, one can see that the interior leads the full life, meeting all needs of owners. Homeowners bring memories from their travels: copper pots and antique lamps, porcelain kitchenware and the big collection of traditional Belarusian elements.

The classical interior of the house did not became the holy cow. A certain eclecticism is visible even inside the interior where the basic English interior is complemented by the Italian furniture and “spiced” by Belarusian objects, like a millstone in the bathhouse base and a britzska by the house. Due to certain liberties allowed, the house does not look fossilized. It is vivid and lively, and the modern elements are in their places too.

Designer’s commentary: I am usually working in modern style, yet I had no fear before the classical one. As for me, a designer can freely tinker with classical materials, shapes and details, as in any other style. In general, there is no such style as a classical one. When we say “classical”, we imagine prototypes, elements and details descending from the Byzantine, Roman or Gothic style, we refer to the pre-Renaissance of Tuscany, to the Renaissance era itself. I think that this collision gives the carte blanche to designer who is free to use any ideas and combine them in any possible way gaining advantage from different and even contradictory elements. Me, for instance, I see no sense in complete pastiche: it is ineffective as in materials, as in costs. In addition to traditional interior details, one can find everything what a modern needs to lead the proper lifestyle: a shower cabin, AC system, TV sets. It is but comfortable, not to mention the general coziness and beauty. This is the most important part, I believe.

Not all of those who are moving out of town seek privacy and repose. The huge land becomes the perfect opportunity for owners to express the hospitality in full extent. In fact, the happy owners of the house can offer their guests the whole range of leisure activities: BBQ, bathhouse and chat-in by the open fire, as well as promenades and sport activities. And, of course, the unlimited amount of fresh air.

The owners of the house are very hospitable. They are lucky – their land parcel is located just by the forest. Moreover, its elongated shape was an absolute benefit for the layout. Nevertheless, even though the owners are always happy to see their guests, it was necessary to save the peace and repose of neighbours and family itself. That is why the house is located just at the border with another land parcel. At the tail of the house, other buildings are located: the bathhouse, firewood shed and the guesthouse with the porch. In this way, the noisy guests’ area was moved away from neighbours and the main house; yet, the whole complex works like a certain sound barrier.

All buildings fronts are timber framed with dark wooden beams on the light background. However, the space between timber frames was filled with Flemish brick instead of a white plaster. The use of five different shades of this material added a certain degree of the overall brightness. Paved paths and the entry have something in common with colors variety with the house front. The tile used here is different in size and colors.

The landscape style was imposed by the forest – any flowerbeds with it in the background would look, at least, strange. Therefore, the huge stones became the main decoration of the place. They are reigning over the rockery, are the base for benches and two waterfalls. Moreover, the stone giant of 8 tons lies just by the gates. The owners had to fall back on three cranes to move it! Stone design with the emerald grass in the background looks very impressive. What is more important, it requires less care than ornamental plants. The forest conquered the place inside the perimeter of the place. The sandstone slabs path leads to the real cellar – provisions would not be out of place in such a house.

The big living room is a witness of owners’ hospitality too. Its interior style is set by the oldest image of family hearth – the flaming fire in the cave. To create the illusion of solid rock, the wall and fireplace were faced with limestone. Limestone slabs were cut in pieces different in size and were put on the wall as a puzzle. The same style was used for two support pillars. It was very difficult and diligent work, but the end result met all requirements.

The ceiling is also decorated in a very unusual way. The solid beam encased with carved panels from the aged oak is resting on pillars. Dark-colored pine beams serve as a background. In general, the house has lots of wooden structures, objects and decoration. However, the interior does not look dull. It is not just the use of different wood species, like ash tree, oak, larch, pine or fir tree. The very approach to the material is astonishing: the wooden objects are adorned with carvings, painted, and combined with other wood species. Every corner of this apartment has handmade chef-d’ oeuvres that draw the eye: windows are adorned with carved linings, each bedroom has the theme-based carved panel picture, and the bed in son’s bedroom is a masterpiece – it resembles the medieval ship hull.

Designer’s (Sergei Kononovich) commentary: The Middle Ages invention – the timber framing – becomes popular in recent years for a reason. On the one hand, the timber framing is exquisite; on the other hand, such houses blend in perfectly with the gentle countryside and accentuate the use of natural materials. Plenty of works and four years of waiting, and the result is almost identical to the primordial design, even though we did everything, from architectural design to actual building, and from interior to the landscape architecture. The total integrity of the idea, which lied in the maximal use of the environment, and the perfect understanding of customer needs also helped. As a result, one can see the house for those who appreciate the beauty and exclusiveness of natural materials.

Like owner, like house. The mankind is famous for its burning desire to change the environment, to restyle it, creating after all the very distinctive and private dwelling that can tell the story of the owner. Since the owner of this house participated in the project from the very beginning, this analogy seems appropriate and not superfluous at all. The house that belongs to the architect Cyril Skorynin and the graphic designer Galya Skorynina bears resemblance to his owners and creators: it is friendly, open, light, very distinctive and outstanding.

The choice of building structure is quite unusual: it is mass-metal frame. This decision helped but to tinker with layout and create the uncommon exterior of the house. The full glazing along the entire perimeter of the house separates the floors. It creates the feeling of the hovering first floor. To maintain this sensation the upper level is paneled with the “light” larch planks. Thus, even the open beams look like mooring wires keeping the house on ground. The house is located within the city limits, in a small estate. However, the sensation of lightness and airiness does not leave guests not inside, nor outside of the house.

Space issues were also taken into consideration. The roof of the house serves as the recreational area. One can find here a shed based on the utility air-ventilation chamber. The sensation of lightness fills the place; one can easily feel it taking a cup of coffee sitting “on the top of the world”.

On the whole, the exterior and interior of the house are intertwined and interconnected, endeavor to unite, and become integral. That is why the ground floor flooring is the same as the veneer of the house front. The interior palette closely echoes the shade of the wooden exterior. It was whitened deliberately, while the wooden panels do not bear any decoration coatings. This decision led to the natural discoloration and ageing of the wood that has to be naturally grey as per the vision of the designer. In a couple of years, when thuja fence will grow sufficiently, the enclosed court will become one more “eco”-room. The smart garden with small trees forms the active part of the ground floor interior due to the glazed wall.

When looking at the French windows, the strident feeling of cold strikes through. Yet, the homeowner assures that such wall is not inferior in comparison with the standard one in thermal properties. In sunny winter days, these windows become the additional heat source – the sun heats up the floor. In the meantime, the apron protects the house from the ardent heat of the summertime. At the same time, this apron serves as a base for balconies. The accurate assessment led to the use of cutting-edge technologies when building the house. The forced ventilation system is but a source of the necessary ventilation and a barrier for kitchen smells spreading in the uniform volume of the ground floor. It also allows keeping windows closed. Built-in convectors on the first floor expanded the internal space of all rooms. Thermostats installed in every room make the heating system very efficient. Such well-thought functionality adds to the innovative architecture and creates the sensation of comfort and well-being.

The biggest gift for any architect, guided by his or her preferences and visions, is to work independently, without a backward glance to other people’s opinion. Only in this context the final result can delight and bewilder. This house is a vivid vindication of such a splendor.

Designer’s (Kyril Skorynin) commentary: The most expensive and complex solution in this house is a glazing system. It was quite a task to find a contractor ready to manufacture and install the stained-glass windows with lots of elements. Yet the battle awaited us, the battle for the little things: the frontward system unlike the glazing one is not manufactured but built. Therefore, all intersections and joints have to be even. However, it was worth it. The feeling of sitting on the warm floor and looking to the falling snow cannot be overestimated.

When building the single family home, the most difficult task is to create its balanced and consistent image. The image which details do not contradict the general concept. The image where the exterior form is identical to the interior; the image with the excellent impeccability as a main feature. New design project of Alla Koncedailova illustrates the masterful approach to this task.

The strict symmetry of the front, the windows with French layout framed by the discreet stucco, the simple pattern of forging make the house style easily recognizable. Classical style. Believe that the house is new is almost impossible: clear, even lines of a refined and stout house create the feeling of immersion into the beginning of XIX century. One awaits from the house interior a certain elegance and aristocracy attributable to that era. Awaits… and still thinks if it is possible at all. Although the classical style is highly esteemed and respected in design, one can rarely avoid two major difficulties when using it. While following all forms and solutions of the classical style with compulsory antiques in every corner of the house, the designer risks to create the most ostentatious “museum”. At the same time, the overly abundant use of modern materials will logically lead to the sensation of falsity. However, when working on this project, due to the proper selection of applicable elements, styles and “creative re-thinking” of other elements that were less applicable to modern needs, the balance was found.

Some elements in this house are related to the traditional “classical” style: the marble stairs with forged banisters, gilded lamps, the fireplace with the white marble mantelpiece, the furniture with cabriole legs, paintings on the walls. With that, modern materials predefined the whole look and style of the house interior. For instance, the mix of design tiles with hardwood flooring is used instead of the decorative flooring, which would not certainly look good in the apartment. The unusual replacement for tapestry was also found. The ground floor got the decorative stucco with the velvet texture; the bedrooms in private areas are adorned with Dutch wallpapers that resemble the fabric with emblazonment.

The classical interior has a very distinctive feature – the abundance of gilt. The noble color was used in every corner of palace halls. This trick found its place: the gilt can be found everywhere in the living room – on lamps, furniture, and frames. Even the dark, deep color of walls is gilded. However, the fine match of quantity and shades makes the gold color almost invisible; it only creates the sensation of glowing that gives the solemn and festive look to the apartment.

Smart combination of traditional tricks and their modern versions makes the house very in, comfortable, and not showing off the wealth of its owners.

Designer’s (Alla Koncedailova) commentary: Homeowners were definite in their choice: all they wanted was the classical style, cozy, quiet and respectable. Among the whole range of the classical style tools, we have chosen the solutions to match this very interior. The variety of materials and textures, the whole house looks integral, and the space is perceived naturally. Limited use of active color spots – it is but painting and decoration elements mainly – freshens the quite place up. The house interior became the reflection of the inner world of homeowners as people who appreciate the elegance and pay the special attention to details.
